Does Continual Cooling Matter After Baby Loss?

Written by CuddleCot Bereavement Consultant Sian Ness

When a family experiences the loss of a baby, every moment they spend together becomes deeply significant. The environment in which those moments happen can shape how parents remember their baby and how they begin to process their grief. Continual cooling plays a central role in enabling these precious hours and days.

At CuddleCot, we often speak with families, healthcare professionals, bereavement teams, and hospice professionals about the practical and emotional realities of this time. One of the strongest advocates for gentle, family-led care is Sian Ness, CuddleCot’s Bereavement Consultant and an experienced bereavement healthcare professional.

Sian explains:

“I believe that using positive and gentle language is essential, especially when discussing the physical changes that occur after death. These are difficult realities for anyone to consider, and a compassionate approach helps to soften what can otherwise feel stark or distressing (and with a baby in particular, this is a difficult concept for anyone to process).

Consistent exposure to a low temperature slows natural post-mortem changes, which becomes particularly important when a family spends several days with their baby.

Fluctuations between cold and warmer temperatures can accelerate microbial activity, and this is where the use of the CuddleCot provides an advantage. A baby being taken in and out of a cold cot is more vulnerable to these fluctuations than a baby who is swaddled continuously.

There is also an important emotional and psychological aspect to consider. Parents often seek elements of ‘normality’ in circumstances that are anything but normal. Being able to swaddle their baby, hold them, and maintain the appearance of a peacefully sleeping, well wrapped baby creates gentler, more comforting memories. This experience is quite different from a scenario where their baby must remain on a cold plate in an environment that does not resemble the setting they would normally be in.

From a trauma-informed perspective, this approach also supports parents’ mental health. Providing a more natural, familiar, and nurturing environment can reduce distress and contribute positively to their grieving process.”

Her reflections capture a truth that many professionals recognise. Continual cooling is an act of care that enables families to experience closeness without the distress of rapid physical changes, repeated transfers, or unfamiliar mortuary spaces.

Supporting families in the environment that feels right for them

One of the most powerful benefits of the CuddleCot is that it allows parents to stay with their baby in a place that feels safe and familiar. This may be a labour ward room, maternity bereavement suite, NICU, paediatric department, emergency department, or at home. Continual cooling helps maintain the appearance of a gently sleeping baby, which can make a profound difference to how memories form.

By removing the need for repeated moves between a cot, ice packs or a cooler plate, continual cooling also protects the baby from temperature fluctuations. Families can simply hold, swaddle, and settle their baby as often as they need to. This supports the natural instincts of caregiving that do not disappear after loss.

A trauma-informed approach that honours the baby and the family

The psychological impact of these early hours and days is well documented. When care feels natural, respectful and gentle, families often describe feeling more grounded and better able to process their emotions. Continual cooling supports this by allowing families to grieve in a calmer, more private environment.

For many parents, these moments become the foundation of their relationship with their baby’s memory. Every touch, photograph, and quiet hour together matters. Continual cooling helps make these experiences possible.

Why continual cooling should be the standard

CuddleCot is widely used in maternity services, but its benefits extend to NICU, paediatrics, emergency departments, and community bereavement care. Any setting that supports families after baby loss can help protect these moments by ensuring consistent, gentle cooling without disruption.

Continual cooling is not simply a technical process. It is a pathway to more compassionate, family-led experiences. It gives time back to parents who will carry these memories for the rest of their lives.

‘While You Were Apart’ Words from those who cared for your baby

There are some questions that bereaved parents carry quietly for years.

Bringing Thea home was so important to us.

We were recently contacted by Katie, mum to Seb and Thea-Dottie who wanted to share the importance of the CuddleCot to their family and how it enabled them to take precious Thea-Dottie home where she belonged. Not every family is given this opportunity, sometimes due to another family using a device and lack of availability, or simply a and heartbreakingly a lack of awareness.

No family should experience what we did

Ezra’s mum, Lianne shares their journey with grief, their bereavement care experiences, and why they are dedicated to advocating for better standards of compassionate bereavement care for families.
