Supporting Families Through Twin and Triplet Loss

Twins Trust Shares Their Journey and Future Vision

When Twins Trust was founded in 1979 by a mother of twins, it was with a simple but powerful goal: to provide dedicated support for families of multiples. Over the years, that mission has grown to embrace every stage of family life, including the most difficult experiences of loss. For parents navigating the grief of losing a twin or triplet, Twins Trust has become a vital source of understanding, guidance, and community. In this conversation, we explore what inspired the charity to expand its support for bereaved families, the unique challenges they face, and what lies ahead.

Twin and Triplet Loss

What inspired Twins Trust to begin supporting families experiencing twin or triplet loss, and what’s next for your work?

Twins Trust was founded in 1979 by a mother of twins who recognised the need for dedicated support for families of multiples. Over time, it became clear that families facing the loss of a twin or triplet were not receiving the understanding and attention they needed. Looking ahead, we hope to see fewer families affected by multiple baby loss as improvements in maternal care continue. However, for those in our community who are grieving, we remain committed to providing support, guidance, and encouragement every step of the way.

What types of support or resources do you provide that make the biggest difference for families?

Our peer support programme is truly invaluable for families, alongside our thriving and active online communities. Having a space where people can connect with others who understand, offering relatability, empathy, and shared experience, provides a sense of comfort and reassurance that is difficult to find elsewhere.

Are there any common challenges or misconceptions about twin/triplet loss you’d like to raise awareness of?

At Twins Trust, we are a compassionate and family-focused organisation. While we recognise that all forms of baby loss matter, we also know that the loss of one baby from a multiple set, or all babies, brings unique challenges to grieving and healing. Our bereavement support services combine lived experience with coping strategies, peer networks, and research-backed guidance from healthcare professionals, offering families the tailored support they need.

Do you have an upcoming event, campaign, or resource you’d like us to share?

We are excited to announce that our website and rebrand will be relaunched by the end of 2025, bringing fresh resources and improved access to support. In the meantime, our dedicated grief booklet can be accessed here:

What message of hope or support would you give to families navigating this type of loss?

Our message to bereaved families, and especially to those grieving the loss of a twin or triplet, is to be gentle with yourself and take each day one step at a time. Although we are bound together by stories we wish were different, there is strength in numbers and comfort in connection. Within this community, we support one another through the most difficult times of our lives.

Twin and triplet loss is a grief few can truly understand without lived experience, yet Twins Trust has built a community where no one has to walk this path alone. Through peer support, resources, and compassionate guidance, the charity continues to stand beside families at their most difficult moments while also working toward a future where fewer parents face this kind of heartbreak. As their rebrand and refreshed website launch in 2025, the commitment remains the same: to ensure that every family who experiences multiple baby loss feels seen, supported, and surrounded by care.

‘While You Were Apart’ Words from those who cared for your baby

There are some questions that bereaved parents carry quietly for years.

Bringing Thea home was so important to us.

We were recently contacted by Katie, mum to Seb and Thea-Dottie who wanted to share the importance of the CuddleCot to their family and how it enabled them to take precious Thea-Dottie home where she belonged. Not every family is given this opportunity, sometimes due to another family using a device and lack of availability, or simply a and heartbreakingly a lack of awareness.

No family should experience what we did

Ezra’s mum, Lianne shares their journey with grief, their bereavement care experiences, and why they are dedicated to advocating for better standards of compassionate bereavement care for families.
