Aching Arms’ Compassionate Care: Bringing Comfort to Families After Baby Loss

At CuddleCot, we are honoured to highlight the incredible work of Aching Arms, a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved families by offering comfort in the form of donated bears and emotional support. Founded by Leanne Turner after the heartbreaking loss of her baby, James, Aching Arms has grown into a beacon of hope for thousands of parents navigating the pain of baby loss. Today, we celebrate their remarkable journey and the profound impact they continue to have on grieving families.

Can you share the story behind the founding of your charity and what inspired you to create it?

Aching Arms was founded by Leanne Turner after a deeply personal and heartbreaking experience. In May 2009, during a 21-week anomaly scan, Leanne and her partner Mark discovered that their baby, James, had a fatal condition. James passed away shortly after, and Leanne delivered him through induced labor two weeks later. The loss was devastating, and Leanne felt a profound physical ache in her arms, longing to hold her baby.

A friend sent Leanne a soft throw blanket, which provided her with some comfort and helped ease her pain. This act of kindness inspired Leanne to create Aching Arms, a charity aimed at providing comfort to other bereaved parents. She wanted to ensure that other mothers who had lost their babies knew they were not alone and that others understood the ache they felt in their empty arms.

Leanne posted on an online support forum, seeking others who wanted to help create the charity. The response was overwhelming, with many recently bereaved women joining as the first trustees and fundraisers. In June 2010, Aching Arms began providing comfort bears to bereaved parents through hospitals and direct mail.

Today, Aching Arms has grown significantly, distributing thousands of bears annually and supporting bereaved parents across the UK. The charity continues to honor James’s memory and provides a source of comfort and support to many families.

What are the core missions and goals of your organisation in supporting bereaved families?

Vision: To bring comfort and support to bereaved families across the UK, for as long as they need us.

Mission: To raise awareness of the impact of baby loss, both in health settings and the wider community, by working with health professionals and employers to ensure all bereaved families receive high quality care, and through the gift of an Aching Arms Bear and the support available via Supporting Arms find comfort and support for their emotional and mental wellbeing.

Could you highlight some of the most impactful programs and services you offer to families experiencing baby loss?

Aching Arms’ most impactful program is arguably their Comfort Bear initiative. This program provides comfort bears to bereaved parents who have lost their babies during pregnancy, at birth, or shortly after. Each bear is donated by another bereaved family, symbolising a shared understanding and support.

The comfort bears serve as a tangible source of solace, helping parents feel less alone in their grief. The initiative has grown significantly, with Aching Arms distributing thousands of bears annually through hospitals, hospices, and direct requests.

Additionally, the Supporting Arms service is highly impactful. This service offers telephone and email support from bereaved parents, providing a compassionate and understanding ear to those navigating their loss. The combination of these programs ensures that bereaved families receive both immediate comfort and ongoing emotional support.

What specific support do you provide for siblings, grandparents, dads, and the extended family who are also affected by the loss?

Aching Arms offers a range of support services tailored to the needs of siblings, grandparents, dads, and the extended family who are affected by the loss of a baby:

  1. For Dads:
  • Monthly Online Support Group: Aching Arms hosts a monthly online group specifically for dads, facilitated by a bereaved dad. This group provides a space for dads to share their experiences and gain support from others who understand their grief.
  • Telephone Helpline: There is a dedicated helpline for dads who prefer one-on-one support from another bereaved dad.
  • Dads’ Guide: The charity provides a guide titled “You are a dad…. You always will be,” which offers advice and support tailored to the unique experiences of bereaved fathers.
  1. For Siblings:
  • Comfort Bears: As the comfort bears are primarily for parents, the charity has the beautiful Dandelion Bear available for siblings to help them feel included and supported during the grieving process. The Dandelion Bears is sponsored by local businesses and gifted to hospitals for offering to bereaved siblings.
  • Resources and Activities: In the near future Aching Arms plans to provide resources and activities designed to help siblings understand and cope with their feelings of loss.
  1. For Grandparents:
  • Support and Resources: Grandparents are often deeply affected by the loss of a grandchild. Aching Arms offers resources and support to help them navigate their grief and support their children during this difficult time.
  1. For the Extended Family:
  • Community and Support Services: The charity’s Supporting Arms service is available to all family members, offering telephone and email support from bereaved parents. This service helps extended family members understand the grieving process and provides them with the tools to support their loved ones.

These services ensure that all family members receive the support they need to cope with their loss and help each other through the grieving process.

What have been some of your most significant achievements or milestones since the charity’s inception?

Aching Arms has achieved several significant milestones since its inception in 2010. Here are some of the most notable:

Expansion of Comfort Bear Distribution: Starting with the aim to donate 10 bears to one hospital, Aching Arms now distributes around 8,000 bears annually to more than 190 hospitals across the UK. This expansion has significantly increased the charity’s reach and impact.

Supporting Arms Service: The introduction of the Supporting Arms service has provided crucial emotional support to bereaved families through telephone and email support from other bereaved parents. This service has been instrumental in offering ongoing support and understanding to those navigating their grief.

How do you ensure that your support services are accessible and effective for all bereaved parents?

Aching Arms employs several strategies to ensure their support services are accessible and effective for all bereaved parents:

  1. Wide Distribution Network: Aching Arms collaborates with over 170 hospitals and hospices across the UK to distribute comfort bears. This extensive network ensures that their services reach a broad audience, including those in early pregnancy care, delivery wards, and neonatal units.
  1. Supporting Arms Service: This service offers flexible telephone and email support from bereaved parents, providing a compassionate and understanding ear. The service is available to anyone in the UK, ensuring accessibility regardless of location.
  1. Educational Resources: Aching Arms provides educational materials and training for healthcare professionals to improve bereavement care. This helps ensure that all bereaved families receive high-quality support from well-informed professionals.
  1. Inclusive Support Programs: The charity offers specific support for dads, siblings, and grandparents, recognizing that the loss of a baby affects the entire family. Programs like the monthly online support group for dads and resources for siblings help ensure that all family members receive the support they need.
  1. Community Outreach: Aching Arms engages in community and fundraising events to raise awareness and support for their mission. These events help build a supportive community for bereaved families and ensure that more people are aware of the available resources.
  1. Feedback and Adaptation: The charity continuously seeks feedback from the families they support to improve and adapt their services. This ensures that their programs remain relevant and effective in meeting the needs of bereaved parents.

These strategies collectively ensure that Aching Arms’ support services are both accessible and effective, providing comprehensive care to bereaved families. How do you think these efforts might impact the families they support?

Can you discuss any recent projects or initiatives your charity is working on to further support families?

Aching Arms has been actively working on several recent projects and initiatives to further support bereaved families:

  1. Dandelion Bears: In July 2024, Aching Arms launched the “Dandelion Bears” initiative, specifically designed for siblings who have lost a baby brother or sister. These bears aim to provide comfort and remind siblings that they are not alone in their grief. The charity hopes to partner with businesses to sponsor these bears, ensuring they reach as many grieving children as possible.

  1. Be Together Events: The charity has planned new “Be Together” events for September 2024. These events aim to bring together families who have received comfort bears, healthcare professionals, and local businesses to foster a supportive community.

How can individuals and communities get involved in supporting your charity and its mission?

Can you share a particular story or testimonial from a family who has been positively impacted by your charity’s work

In August 2016, Ross and his wife Natalie lost their son, Aaron Lewis. The grief was overwhelming, especially while trying to be parents to their other two children, Thomas and Caitlyn. They received an Aching Arms comfort bear, donated by another grieving family. This simple gesture provided immense comfort to their family. Whenever any of them felt overwhelmed by grief, they would hold the bear, finding solace in its presence.

Inspired by the support they received, Ross decided to give back to Aching Arms. He participated in the London Marathon in 2020, which was eventually held virtually due to the pandemic. Since then, he has completed multiple marathons and other challenges, raising awareness and funds for the charity. Ross now volunteers as an ambassador, attending events and representing Aching Arms.

Ross’s story highlights the profound impact that Aching Arms can have on bereaved families, providing not only comfort but also a sense of community and purpose.

Aching Arms has transformed Leanne Turner’s grief into a powerful source of comfort and support for bereaved families across the UK. Through the gift of comfort bears and compassionate peer support, they ensure that no parent has to endure their loss alone. CuddleCot is deeply inspired by their work and grateful to share in the mission of raising awareness about baby loss and providing families with meaningful care and support. Together, we continue to honor the memories of beautiful babies while providing comfort and hope to their families.

‘While You Were Apart’ Words from those who cared for your baby

There are some questions that bereaved parents carry quietly for years.

Bringing Thea home was so important to us.

We were recently contacted by Katie, mum to Seb and Thea-Dottie who wanted to share the importance of the CuddleCot to their family and how it enabled them to take precious Thea-Dottie home where she belonged. Not every family is given this opportunity, sometimes due to another family using a device and lack of availability, or simply a and heartbreakingly a lack of awareness.

No family should experience what we did

Ezra’s mum, Lianne shares their journey with grief, their bereavement care experiences, and why they are dedicated to advocating for better standards of compassionate bereavement care for families.
