💙 A Gift of Time: The Hughes Family’s Legacy 💙

Families grieving the loss of a baby at Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital now have access to a CuddleCot, thanks to the incredible generosity of Katelyn and Joel Hughes.

On what should have been the happiest day of their lives—the due date of their first child—Katelyn and Joel turned their personal tragedy into an opportunity to help others. Their son, Baby Fletcher, was born sleeping on May 2, after his heart stopped beating in the womb at 26 weeks.

The only solace they found was in the hospital’s CuddleCot, which allowed them to spend nearly three precious days with Fletcher, inviting their families to meet him and making lasting memories before saying goodbye.

Inspired by the comfort the CuddleCot provided, Katelyn and Joel began raising funds for Bears of Hope, aiming to donate one CuddleCot to a hospital. In less than 24 hours, they surpassed their goal, raising enough to donate two—one to a Geelong hospital and the other to Joan Kirner Women’s and Children’s Hospital.

Michelle Ryan, nurse unit manager at Western Health, praised the Hughes family for their inspiring generosity: “They are giving other families the most precious gift—time with their babies.”

We honor the Hughes family for turning their loss into a legacy of love and compassion.

‘While You Were Apart’ Words from those who cared for your baby

There are some questions that bereaved parents carry quietly for years.

Bringing Thea home was so important to us.

We were recently contacted by Katie, mum to Seb and Thea-Dottie who wanted to share the importance of the CuddleCot to their family and how it enabled them to take precious Thea-Dottie home where she belonged. Not every family is given this opportunity, sometimes due to another family using a device and lack of availability, or simply a and heartbreakingly a lack of awareness.

No family should experience what we did

Ezra’s mum, Lianne shares their journey with grief, their bereavement care experiences, and why they are dedicated to advocating for better standards of compassionate bereavement care for families.
